Synapse-EMR Client

Client Installation

Download latest version here ( see Forum for details )

The client synapse.exe can be placed into most any directory, and has been tested under Windows XP, Windows 2003, and Windows 2000. It makes no registry changes, and can be removed by simply deleting the file.

Configuration

By default, the client when started will connect to the demo server. You have to change this by setting an environment variable on your PC to point to your own server. If only one person uses the PC, then you can set up a user environment variable. If multiple users are using the same PC, it will be easier to set up a system environment variable.

Load up the control panel in XP, and select the advanced tab. Click on the "environment variables" button, and then add a new variable synapse-port of value, eg, 192.168.1.1:8011 substituting the ip address of your own server. The port 8011 remains unchanged. Alternatively, you can use a domain such as www.compkarori.co.nz:8011 . You may need to logout and login again, or reboot, for this to become effective. You can also set the environment variable of synapse-user to your default login name.

Firewalls

Synapse needs to start a server process on port 8001 to run a local web-server. This is used to view some images and documents. Windows XP firewall, and other firewall will detect this, and will by default block this functionality. You should configure your firewalls to not block this functionality.

Proxy Servers

In the login screen, you have the opportunity to set your Proxy Server settings. When you press the "Save" button, it will check your settings by trying to read a page from a website. If an error occurs, you will be alerted to this.

If you are not sure of what your proxy settings are, you can check them in FireFox as in Tools/Options/Connection Settings, and in Internet Explorer, Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings.

MS Word and LaTeX

Synapse can use MS Word for composing, and writing letters. But it can also use an existing LaTeX installation. This gives better control over letter and prescription formats. It is suggested that you download and install MiKTeX distribution which will give you beautifully typeset documents. The default setting is for this to be installed into c:\texmf

Note that you will need to install MiKTeX if you want to be able to print the CDC growth charts.

Growth Charts

Synapse will prompt you to install the growth charts as you use them, but it is much quicker to download them all as a single zip file, and unpack into the directory where you are running Synapse from.

Personal Settings

When run for the first time, and for a new user, you need to set up the correct user details in the "Settings" tab which appears after your have logged in.

Other Help

Other documents will follow on adding patients, writing scripts, requesting investigations, giving appointments etc
